GET A SCANNER RADIO - STAY INFORMED
I use the Uniden BC365CRS scanner radio. It's a great unit that does everything I need. That's it sitting at the botton-right in the pic.

The following report was written for Wichita Falls, Texas but the principles apply to any location. You can use the "search" feature of the scanner to find active frequencies in your area.
The absolute best way to stay informed, and even entertained, is by owning a scanner radio. Simply put, a scanner radio stores hundreds of radio frequencies and scans them at a very rapid pace, listening for activity. When it detects activity on a frequency, it pauses there to listen. You can let it resume scan if there is a break in the activity on that frequency, or you can stop the scan on that frequency, making sure you don't miss a word.
Two popular frequencies in the Wichita Falls area are the Wichita Falls area Amateur (ham) Radio Skywarn® storm spotters (146.940 MHz) and the Clay County (Henrietta) Amateur (ham) Radio Skywarn® storm spotters (146.800 MHz). Why wait for second- or third-hand information from a news agency when you can hear the reports of wall clouds, rotation, funnel clouds, and even tornadoes live as they occur? Don't wait! Get a scanner radio and get it live!
When the skies are clear, local Ham Radio operators are chatting away on the various VHF and UHF frequencies covered by all scanner radios. While there's a lot of talk about radios and related equipment, you can also hear other interesting conversations, including information on club meetings, weekly on-the-air meetings, local Amateur Radio license testing opportunities, swap meets, and more! Plus, there are always licensed Amateur (ham) Radio Operators aboard the International Space Station making contact with "hams" on the ground. You can also monitor local CB Radio communications on the Uniden scanner. A local group gets on Channel 23 just about every evening.
When the SHTF, the bulk of important radio communications will be on the VHF and UHF frequencies. This includes the Family Radio Service, General Mobile Radio Service, Multi-Use Radio Service, the Amateur (ham) Radio Service, and the Business Band. These frequencies, and more, are covered by the Uniden BC365CRS scanner radio. Check the menu for my list of scanner frequencies for the Wichita County area.
With three airports plus a nearby FAA Remote Communications Air-Ground facility, there is plenty of aviation radio traffic to enjoy. The nearby Allred Unit prison, city buses, school buses, schools, hotels, Target, Walmart, and various other entities will keep you entertained. Again, check the menu for my list of scanner radio frequencies for this area.
